The relationship of personality traits with empathic concerns, altruistic values and helping behavior

The main purpose of the research was investigate the relationship of personality traits with empathic concerns, altruistic values and helping behavior among people in Isfahan city. 400 Residents of Isfahan from different parts of the city were selected by multi stage sampling. Research instruments were 4 questionnaires including personality traits with 40 items, empathic concerns with 7 items, altruism values with 4 items and helping behavior with 15 items. Pearson’s correlation coefficient and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyze data. Results of the study revealed a significant positive correlation between conscientiousness, agreeableness with empathic concerns, altruistic values and a significant negative correlation with emotional stability. Also There was a significant positive correlation between extraversion with informal helping to close others, agreeableness with formal helping, informal helping to close others and distant others. Emotional stability had a significant negative correlation with informal helping to close others. There were a significant positive correlation between altruistic values with empathic concerns and both of them with all helping behaviors. Also, conscientiousness, agreeableness and emotional stability traits by altruistic values and empathic concerns affect helping behaviors.
