A Study of Representation of Women in the Satellite TV Network
Author(s):
Abstract:
Distinction between the real world and its images represented by the mediation of media has transformed the concept of media representation into a key concept in cultural and media studies. This article aims at obtaining an understanding of women's image and status in the satellite TV network "Manoto1" based on the constructionist theory of representation developed by Stuart Hall. It shows the manner in which women are represented in this TV network and explores its correlation with a certain lifestyle. To do this, a four part program titled "An Invitation to Dinner" (Befarmaeid Sham) broadcast in March and April 2013, out of all the productions of this TV was analyzed semiotically based on a purposeful method. Among the most important findings of this research, presenting gender stereotypes, trying to secularize everyday life by introducing Western lifestyle, inspiring and naturalizing notions such as individualism, fashion-oriented behavior, consumerism, and desanctifying native values could be mentioned which are carried out by applying the main strategies of representation that are naturalization and stereotyping.
