Assessing the Impact of Border Markets as a Stimulus of Development and Security in Border Areas: Case study Southern Khorasan

Employment of residents of border areas, local economy flourishing and border citie's prosperity are the main objectives of setting up border marketplaces. The most important issues facing the developing countries are achieving sustainable development among regions, security and pervasive social justice. Border region's underdevelopment can be the results of geographical isolation, remoteness from industrial and economic poles and underdevelopment in social, economic, political and cultural dimensions.Although cross-border transactions are informal and local, they have a significant role in trades between the neighboring countries and they can improve the lives of residents of border areas. Border markets compensates and overcomes the existing gaps in border's limitations and prevent from borders to be desolated. This would be an effective factor in enhancing border security and preventing smuggling. In this regard, given that border markets have great potential for increasing security, they can be considered as an approach to sustainable security in the region. This paper using descriptive-analytical method and relying on library resources tries to investigate the role of border markets in the security and development of border regions specially those of Southern Khorasan. Results show that the economic impact of border markets on the security of this province can be one of the indicators in its development plans.
