Effect of slow stroke back massage on anxiety in patients with stroke- A randomized clinical trial

Stroke is a disease that restricts the patient''s independence in daily activities and it result in anxiety. Massage therapy is a useful action in nursing profession that one of them is slow stroke back massage (SSBM). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of SSBM massage on anxiety in patients with stroke.

In this semi- experimental randomized clinical trial study، 34 patients were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria among 70 patients and then assigned into two groups of control and case. Data collection tools was Spielberg state anxiety scale. The prevalence of anxiety was determined and compared 24 hours before and after the last massage therapy.

The mean of anxiety before intervention in case group was 61. 40 ±8. 25 and in control group was 61. 80 ±3. 85 and after the intervention in case group was 34. 60 ±4. 62 and in control group was 58. 80 ±3. 44، that showed a significant difference compared with before the intervention (p<0. 001).

Using SSBM massage by treatment and caregiver personnel can be an effective way in preventing or reducing anxiety in patients with stroke.
