Ramifications of the Security Council Economic Sanctions on the ‎Enjoyment of Human Rights

Message:
Abstract:
Due to the dramatic increase in sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, 1990s has been named as the 'decade of sanction'. While from the establishment of the United Nations to 1990, only two Sates were sanctioned by the UN Security Council under Chapter Seven of the UN charter, from 1990 to the end of 2011 the UN Security Council imposed 25 cases of sanctions. This 'policy of sanction' has caused in serious concerns about the negative impacts and harmful ramifications of sanctions on enjoyment of human rights by the people of the States under sanctions. The present article aims to study the extensive negative aspects of the sanctions and its consequences which violate the basic principles of human rights. The author believes that due to serious negative impacts of the sanctions on societies under sanction, these sanctions are not in accordance with the human rights norms, and concludes that the economic sanctions by the Security Council violate the UN Charter, and, therefore, the Security Council should be accountable for its practice.
