Evaluation of titanium effect on the fracture toughness and resistance to abrasion of Hadfield steel

Abstract:
In this study, of titanium effect on the fracture toughness and resistance to abrasion of Hadfield steel was investigated. For this purpose, 3 blocks were cast from Hadfield steel (without Ti addition, containing 0.5% Ti and 1% Ti) by using coreless induction furnace. After the casting, all blocks austenitized in 1100°C for 2 hours and immediately quenched in the pure water. In the next step, uniaxial tensile, abrasion by pin-on-disk method, hardness measuring by vickers method and charpy impact tests were applied on them. To evaluation of the microstructures was conducted by optical metallography and the fractured surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy. To evaluate the fracture toughness of the specimens, the results of charpy impact test and fracture toughness empirical relationships were used. As a result, it was found that the lowest hardness – lowest resistance to abrasion - highest fracture toughness – highest critical crack length of the sample without Ti and the highest hardness – highest resistance to abrasion – lowest fracture toughness – lowest critical crack length of the sample containing 1% Ti was awarded.
