Application of Dose-Response Functions in Impact Evaluation of Transportation Related Air Pollution

Air pollution is one of the most concerning challenges in metropolises. A significant part of this pollution is in regard to transportation. Some transportation projects, such as highway construction or street widening projects would encourage the citizens to use their private cars instead of public transportation which leads to more emission.. In most cases, transportation projects’ cost-benefit analysis underestimates destroying effects. In this study, the evaluation of transportation projects with respect to sustainable transportation criteria in urban areas was taken into account and also environmental effects of transportation projects were measured by dose-response functions. This study is the first which has considered effects of air contamination due to transportation by dose-response functions in Tehran city. Different coefficients were used in order to calculate death and disease increase owing to air pollution. Additionally, by using these coefficients, contaminants could be classified regarding their effects on human health. Moreover, by considering these classifications, transportation projects could be ranked. This method is suggested as a substitute of health and life monetization.
