A Survey of Imam Sajjad's Reasons for Non-Participation in the Medinan's Uprising

According to the historical reports, Imam Sajjad (P.B.U.H), the fourth leader of the Shiites, refused to participate in the uprising by the people of Medina against Yazid’s Caliphate. It was two years after the battle of Karbala that the people of Medina revolted against Yazid, a costly revolt which is called Harrah after the name of the place of occurrence in the east of Medina. This major event has been analyzed many times by the historians, some considering it as an aftermath of Yazid’s hostility towards the household of the Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) especially in the battle of Karbala, while some other consider these two factors just correlated to each other. Anyway, the question that is raised here is that why Imam Sajjad avoided participating in the revolt of Harrah along with the people of Medina against the Umayyid Caliph, Yazid-Ibn-Mu’awiyah? To answer this question, this article aims at surveying the reasons behind Imam Sajjad’s non-participation with the hypothesis that he did not consider the revolt as a valuable religion-oriented movement; Thus, Imam Sajjad was never apprehensive of its following results and costs, nor seeking comfort and convenience.
