Effective Behavioral Factors in Explaining the General Public Confidence in Police in Tehran

Public confidence is one of the social capitals which establishes and maintains unity in the social systems and fosters the democratic values. One of the most influential organizations in the social sphere is the police organization. Police is considered as the apparent manifestation of the state power and a part of official system of social control in every society. Public confidence in the police promotes the people's support of the police and its capacity to fulfill police missions. Various factors play a role in building public confidence in the police; in thispaper behavioral factors affecting public confidence in the police have been addressed. This study is of an applied and descriptive-survey research type. The population of the study includes citizens over 18 years old in Tehran. The sample size is 400 individuals who were selected via cluster sampling method. The data were collected through a researcher-made questionnaire and analyzed using correlational tests.Findings and Research has shown that there is a significant positive relationship between behavioral factors and public confidence in the police. In other words, suitable interaction between citizens and the police, the police honesty in speech and behavior, corrective helping behavior of the police, the police complaints system and police engagement with the basic needs of the people are effective in building confidence in the police.
