Assessing nurse's viewpoint affiliated to Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran about effective factors in communication between nurses and patients

Effective communication is an essential feature of nursing care. Identifying factors that prevent effective communication between nurse and patient makes the orientation of necessary measures for eliminating or modifying barriers to health planners and administrators possible. Moreover, developing and maintenance of effective communication between nurses and patients has always been of high interest and the success in creating this relationship is of high importance in health services and improving treatment of patients. Therefore, considering the importance of this relationship, the present study was done with the aim of determining the factors influencing communication between nurses and patients in one of Shahid Beheshti University hospitals. In this cross-sectional study 94 nurses participated. The data collection, interview and tools all were researcher-made questionnaire. The validity of questionnaire was examined through content validity and its reliability was obtained using test-retest. The obtained data using SPSS16 software and descriptive statistics and chi-square test with a significance level of less than 0.05 were analyzed. The results showed that 69.1% of nurses consider communication with the patient to be very effective in providing appropriate clinical services. Furthermore, the conversational language and cultural differences and gender differences have been proposed as the most important factors in effective communication between nurses and patients. Considering the patients’ need for health services and satisfying their emotional needs, having a good relationship between nurses and patients is pivotal and, thus, health manager should focus their attempt to remove or adjust the most important barriers mentioned above.
