Abstract:
The study of the mutual relationship between religion and moral commitment has been an issue of discussions. Although more recent debates tend to the independence of morality and religion, it is commonly believed that religiosity support moral sphere. Functionalist sociologists also argue that religiosity has mainly a positive impact on individuals’ moral behavior which in turn could result in better regulation of social relations, respect of others rights, interaction based on understanding of others. The aim of this article is the empirical examination of the relationship between religiosity and moral commitment in a sample of 372 students of Kharazmi University of Tehran. It is a survey study in which the data collected by a questionnaire. According to the data, religiosity has a positive relation with moral commitment, meanwhile the relationship is hardly observed in social dimension of moral commitment. There is no difference between the relationship of moral commitment and different dimensions of religiosity. The implications of these findings are discussed in the article.
