Grammatical Innovations in the Persian Sport Media

Communication is the main function of the human language as a social institution. It is constantly changed in order to meet the communication needs of the speakers. Due to the specific characteristics of sport media, innovations occur mainly in this type of text. In this study, we tried to investigate the innovations in contemporary Persian sports media. These innovations are studied and analyzed in the framework of the Functional Grammar. The findings of this research show that in the contemporary sports media many sorts of grammatical changes have taken place. Valency reduction, changes in word order, aspectual innovations, analogical constructions, creating new derivations and slang word formations are the most common innovations in this genre. These innovations should not be regarded as mere mistakes, but they show the process of grammatical changes that are in progress in the language.
