Traditional Irrigation System in Ahram

Abstract:
The production of dates and palm trees in Tangestan of the Bushehr province ranks second after Dashtestan. The largest number of palm trees is located in Ahram which is the capital of Tangestan. Ahram's date, and especially Kabkab, is widely known for its quality. A large majority of the people in Ahram are involved in palm cultivation as well as other agricultural products. Thus, the city has been surrounded by palm groves. For not so long ago there used to be an irrigation system in the city called 'Kil piyaleh'. Although the water measurement tools are now obsolete, the people continue to use the old system regardless of the modern measurement tools. The study applied a mixed method of archival and fieldwork studies including data collection techniques such as observation and interview. The traditional irrigation system in studied in the background of natural and human geography of the region. The findings show that the irrigation system in use in this city has unique characteristics, which is different from other cities with similar climatic circumstances.
