The effect of a single session of resistance exercise on indices of muscle damage and DOMS in student male athletes

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of one bout resistance exercise in muscle damage indices and Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness on male athlete students. For this, 20 male students in physical education field voluntarily participated in the study and randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. Resistance exercise includes one stage circuite exercise on 5 stations and each station had 3 turns that each turn was performed with 75percent one maximum repetition in 8 to 10 repetitions. Blood samples were collected before resistance exercise, immediately after the activity, 24 and 48 hours after the activity in the fasting state. McGill pain perception questionnaire was used to determine the muscle soreness before the resistance exercise, immediately after the activity, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the activity and appropriate with the exercise protocol for the Quadriceps, Deltoids, Pectoralis, Gluteus Maximus and Triceps muscles. The results showed that serum levels of kinase creatine indicators had significant increase in the experimental group and in the times of immediately after the activity (p=0.001) and 24 hours after the activity (p=0.013). The serum levels of lactate dehydrogenase in the experimental group was significantly increased in immediately after the activity (p=0.032). The serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase had significant increase in immediately after the activity, 24 and 48 hours after the activity. The results also indicated that the overall amount of perceived pain showed a meaningful increase in the experimental group in immediately after the activity, 24 and 48 hours after the activity. Based on the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that probably one stage of resistance exercise with 75 percent one maximum repetition increases the amount of serum indicators of muscle injury and muscle pain perceived in athlete male students. Therefore, it is recommended at the beginning of implementation the resistance exercise program in athletes, one maximum repetition is used to avoid the muscle soreness from the intensity of less than 75 percent.
