In search of Utopia in Bivatan, a novel by Reza Amirkhani
Author(s):
Abstract:
Bivatan (Homelandless) is a great novel in Resistance Literature and an outstanding story in Holy Defense Literature. Reza Amirkhani has attempted to express the concerns of modern humans identity as per the current conditions of the global community in this novel. He has opened new insights into utopia with a look at the cultural and social processes of todays world as well as the change in the type and dimensions of modern humans attitude toward issues surrounding him. Bivatan doesnt directly deal with war and Holy Defense, however, the resistance of the prominent character of this novel to realize a utopia which is not possible without struggle with filthy powers, is clearly evident. Ermia, the protagonist of this novel, is a symbol of resistance and opposition to oppression. Ermia gets into a foreign land wishing to find a utopian society but denies the false impression of realizing such model there, though some believed it. Is the utopia defined in this novel the same as the one defined in western culture? Does this novel present the addressees with a model of Islamic utopia? Or is such utopian society unattainable and beyond human access? This research is aimed to provide an overview of utopia and its theories. Moreover, it investigates and analyzes the utopian society presented by Reza Amirkhani in Bivatan with an analytical-descriptive method.
