A Survey of the Relationship between Organizational Citizenship Behavior and social loafing of Employees

Abstract:
This study was aimed to survey the relationship between organizational citizenship behavior and social loafing in employees. Organizational citizenship behavior as a useful and effective behavior for productivity and social loafing as non-productive and counter-productive behavior, have been studied. Methods society of present study, were all the experts of aluminum producing company; and 127 people were selected as a representative sample of society, with simple random sampling. Organizational citizenship behavior questionnaire of Organ and Kanovsky (1996); and social loafing questionnaire of Hosseini (2008) were used to measure organizational citizenship behavior and social loafing that were highly valid and reliable. Component of organizational citizenship behavior (Altruism, conscientious, Sportsmanship, Courtesy and civic virtue) were supposed as predictive variables and social loafing as the criterion variable, in the form of an original hypotheses and five sub-hypotheses were raised. Results were analyzed using correlation tests, regression and analysis of variance and SPSS software. Results indicated a significant relationship between Organizational citizenship behavior components and social loafing, including Altruism, conscientious, Courtesy and civic virtue, but no relationship found between organizational citizenship behavior and social loafing. Understanding the relationship between these two variables and predicting them helps the organizations to increase organizational citizenship behavior, and be equipped to reduce social loafing and avoid wasting resources and energy, in order to improve their performance.
