Role of Coping Styles and Resiliency in Predicting Homesickness

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to determine the role of coping styles and resilience in predicting student's homesickness. The method of the study was correlational. The entire population of the study consisted of non-native students in Kurdistan University in the academic year 2013-2014. Out of this popu-lation, 200 students were randomly selected who were staying at Kurdistan University dor-mitories. Of these students 50% (n=100) were female, and the other half were male. In order to collect data, the translated version of Home-sickness Questionnaire (UHS-F), the Resilien-cy Scale) CD-RIS(, and Endler and Parker’s Coping Questionnaire (CISS), were used. The data obtained were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that there was a significant negative correlation between resi-liency and homesickness. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between emotional and avoidant coping styles. The two variables of coping styles, and resilience were quite able to predict homescikness. There also existed a significant relationship between home-sickness and emotion-based and avoidant coping styles. Variables of coping style (emotion-based), resiliency, and gender predicted homesickness (R2=33%).
