The reduction and elimination of embryo in multiple pregnancies from the perspective of jurisprudence and medicine
Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) using their updated techniques have treated sterility and given a new life for infertile couples, but the treatment has had some bad effects the unwanted consequences of which have suddenly threatened their life so that most of the users of these techniques faced prolificacy the continuance of which exposes the family to oppressive crises like death or severe bodily health problems of mother and embryos. The experts inventing the embryo reduction technique have been able to make an end to these problems and nowadays using this method, abort the abnormal embryo or reduce the surplus embryos in multiple pregnancies. Although embryo reduction is an example of abortion but it is a legitimate type of it, i.e. abortion therapy, but with a different and challengeable approach, since in abortion therapy the abnormal embryo or all the embryos are aborted, but in embryo reduction the aim is to abort one of the embryos among multiple ones while all of them are in the same health condition. Therefore, the following questions must be asked about the issue: is it true to sacrifice an embryo for the sake of another one? Is abortion of the surplus embryos necessary? Is it expedient from the perspective of jurisprudence to keep the embryos in dangerous health conditions? And a more challengeable question is that which embryo should be chosen for abortion and is his abortion legitimate? In addition to answering the above mentioned questions we have referring to intellectual and narrated evidences proven that embryo reduction is legitimate due to medical reasons.
