Sesame Oil and Its Chemical and Medicinal Properties

Sesame oil is derived from the plant species of Sesamum indicum L., which is an herbaceous annual belonging to the Pedaliaceae family. Sesame oil has been long used in the traditional medicine of Iran and many other countries due to its significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. This research aims to study the benefits of oral and topical use of sesame oil.
In this review study, 44 articles and documents of a reputable reviewer about the medicinal properties of Sesame oil and Sesame seed and the allergies related to Sesame seeds were extracted from SID, PubMed sites and internal and external journals from 1992 to 2014. The results of researches conducted in animal and human samples were compared.
The results of this study showed that topical use of sesame oil was effective on the pain from external trauma, improved pain from phlebitis, and prevention of phlebitis induced chemotherapy compared to patients who did not use topical sesame oil (P>0/05).
The Results of various articles showed, topical application of sesame oil could reduce pain, induced organic trauma, phlebitis incidence, pain severity and time of healing of phlebitis induced phlebitis due to chemotherapy. It is recommended that this oil with other vegetable oils in clinical cases be compared.
