The Effects of Salinity Stress of NaCl and KCl on the Germination Parameters of Aeluropus littoralis (Gouan) Parl.

Plant growth is an internal process controlled by the environmental factors. Salinity is one of the most significant environmental factors which decrease the growth and performance in plant. Germination is an important stage in the life span of most of the plants. Various salts in soil have different effects on seed and plant germination. To study the effect of sodium chloride and potassium chloride on the growth characteristics of Aeluropus littoralis at germination stage, a completely randomized design experiment with seven treatments (0 (control), 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, & 600 mM) and four replications was conducted. The analysis of variance indicated that different level of sanity of the above mentioned salts had a significant impact on the percentage and rate of germination, plumule and radicle length, coefficient of alometri, and seed vigor. The results obtained from the comparison of means showed a decrease in the germination percentage and rate, length of plumule and radicle, and seed vigor. On the basis of the results it can be concluded that the germination indices of the abovementioned species tolerate KCl easier than NaCl stress. This indicates that the effect of Na is more than K.
