Potential mapping of observation sites in combat units using GIS and fuzzy logic in Nasrabad military drill zone, (Isfahan province)

Terrain recognition and familiarity with its different properties through the application of up-to-date and efficient tools is an important factor in achieving military superiority. Selection of a suitable place to establish observation sites and eavesdropping posts is considered one of the most important and sensitive measures by military commanders on the battlefield. The aim of this study is to identify and determine the optimal deployment areas of observers in Nasrabad before physical presence considering all circumstances, limitations and capabilities. To achieve this goal, factors such as slope, aspect, visibility and concealment, type of landforms, geology and formations, type of soil, access to road networks and the distance from the enemy were examined. After preparing data and necessary thematic maps, operations of standardization were performed on layers. Then the layers were given weights through fuzzy AHP followed by conducting a fuzzy overlay operation and the zonation of the region into five groups - very good, good, average, poor, very poor was done by using fuzzy operators in GIS environment. The results of the research observed on the field indicate that the semi-high terrain and the morphologically important military regions which adapt to the considerations of these places are well-determined.
