The Survey of Relation between Depression and Self-esteem in Female Students

Adolescence is the most critical period of human life in which the incidence of new mental states starts and creates serious mental and social problems.The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and depression in students of Farzanegan girls ‘school in Borojerd.
This was a cross-sectional study in which 143 of Borojerd Farzanegan girls’ school in 2015 were the samples. The data was collected through a demographic, 21-item Beck Depression questionnaire & 58-question Cooper Smith self Esteem Questionnaire. finally the data was entered into SPSS version 21.
The mean age of participants was 13.88 with SD 0.736 years. The results showed that %20.3 of students had moderate to severe depression. Also %62.94 had a low self-esteem. Chi-square tests showed significant differences between depression and self-esteem in the assessed units (P According to the findings more than half of female students had low self-steem. Therefore, it is recommended that with observation of any symptom of depression, it be reported to school officials and behavioral consultants. Maintaining and enhancing self-esteem and on time confrontation of their depression, can rise the quality of education and behavior of students in the school environment and family.
