The effect of hyoscine in labor process of primiparous women (A Clinical Trial Study)

Hyoscine isone the drugs commonly used to improve effacement and dilatation that its efficacy is still questioned. So, this study was performed with aim to evaluate the effect of intravenous hyoscine in labor process of primiparous women.
The triple-blind clinical trial was performed on 300 primiparous pregnant women with term gestational age referred to Kerman Afzalipour hospital in 2015. Samples were randomly divided into two groups of intervention (received hyoscine) and control (received distilled water as placebo). The intravenous single dose injection was conducted at 4 cm dilation and 30-40% of effacement. Maternal status was recorded every one hour. Data were analyzed by software SPSS (version 17) and t-test, Chi-square, correlation and logistic regression. P Mean length of active phase and second stage of labor was higher in case group than control group and the difference between two groups was statistically significant. Also, the mean changes in effacement 1 and 2 hours after injection was statistically significant. While cervical dilatation 1 and 2 hours after injection was not significantly different between case and control groups. The incidence of transient tachycardia and bradycardia fetal heart rate occurred in 78% of case group and in 12.66% of control group (P Mean length of active phase and second stage of labor was higher in those who received hyoscine than the control group. Also, due to the transient drop in occurrence of fetal heart rate which leads to hasty conclusions about the state of fetus, it is better to perform further studies to provide more accuracy in the use of this drug in labor process.
