Relationship between Burnout and Social Support in Emergency Medical Personnel in Kashan City

Burnout is a common syndrome especially among jobs that deal with human relationships. Emergency medical personnel are susceptible to burnout, because of the nature of their profession and job stresses. One way toreduce burnout is social support. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between burnout and social support in emergency medical personnel in Kashan city.
It was a cross-sectional study performed in 2015 . Ninety two emergency medical personnel in Kashan city were recruited by census participated in this study. The instruments included demographic data questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). After completing the questionnaires, data were analyzed using SPSS.
Between 47-63 percent of the personnel experienced moderate levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment. There was significant relationship between family and "significant others" dimensions of social support and emotional exhaustion and depersonalization (P0.05). Also, findings revealed that there are significant relationship between age and marital status with burnout (P Due to significant amount of burnout among emergency medical personnel and positive impact of social support, especially from family and significant others in reducing burnout, increasing the amount of support made by them can play an important role in reducing burnout. Nursing managers should apply supportive strategies in order to provide a suitable environment for joyful professional activities of emergency medical personnel.
