Evaluation of PNU General English Textbook

Message:
Abstract:
University textbooks are one of the most important and accessible instructional materials which constitute an important role in the development and quality of teaching programs, and in the identification of teaching content and policy. One of the ways to evaluate university textbooks is the content analysis, which provides textbooks writers, language programmers and the relevant directors with a good means to design a textbook. This study attempted to offer some suggestions to improve the potential weaknesses of the PNU General English textbook through evaluating it. To this aim, content analysis was employed and Littlejohn's (2011) framework was used for the evaluation. Results revealed some strengths and weaknesses of the textbook and offered some suggestions to improve the content in line with the intended goals and academic principles. In fact, results revealed that the language content, vocabulary and grammar, exercises and activities, and layout of the textbook need to be revised to improve teaching English. The results of the study can provide a good basis for revising and adapting this textbook.
