Abstract:

As the major and natural pathways, world straits play important roles from communicative, political, economic and military viewpoints. Therefore there is a special legal position for them in Convention 1958. There are more than 100 important straits among oceans and/or waterways with a width lower than 40 km (25 miles). But inter alia, five straits are mostly important including Hormoz Strait, Gibraltar, Bosporus, Dardanelles and Bab el Mandeb. This is because they are bottlenecks of oil export to the world. According to the notice of U.S.A Energy Information, about %32 of oil has been transferred to international markets through the above-menttioned straits in 2009. It means about 15 million oil barrels per day through Hormoz Strait for international markets. For this purpose and in a meeting about any probable closeness of Hormoz Strait by Tehran Officials, Patrick Clawson, a researcher of Middle East issues has stated: “Regarding the export of %40 of world required oil through this critical strait , in case of its closeness for a long-term, there will be a fall in world economy accordingly.” With a latitude of 5630” and longitude of 2630” and a width of 55km and length of 310km and depth of about 100m, Hormoz strait is a very sensitive and critical strati whit lots of resistance against any threats through the history. Today it has a great position in strategic and geo-strategic fields and also from economic, social and political aspects. Imam Khomeini has stated in Sahifeh that: There are lots of changes in the world. There are lots of revolutions in the world. You are ignoring the reality and repeat the same words of the past. For instance, you said: We would make lots of tasks in Hormuz strait if Persian Gulf has such a condition and so on”. That is not correct. Do you think it has the same conditions? Please come and see what has happened there! By the way, one day they state that we would do so. As a result, it is a sign of power and authority and a message for global arrogance for no more interests in such a critical approach. On the other hand, they know that it is the end of colonial time with lots of threats for their presence at Hormuz Strait and Persian Gulf.
