Factors Affecting the Fear of Crime in the Marginal Areas in the South of Tabriz City

Fear of crime is a common phenomenon and one of the problems of modern societies. Factors such as gender, social disorganization, attitudes toward the police, formal social control, the environment of the individual etc. contribute to the formation and intensification of this phenomenon. The main purpose of the present research is to determine the impact of social disorganization, attitude towards the police, formal social control, and sex on the rate of fear of crime.
The research method is survey and the instrument is a questionnaire. The statistical population of this study included 15-65 year-old peoples living in the southern part of Tabriz. The participants were selected using random sampling method and Cochran formula. After collecting the questionnaires, the data were analyzed by SPSS software.
Findings: According to the results of this study, the mean score of sense of fear of crime among the residents of marginal areas of southern Tabriz city is higher than the average and this rate among women is more than men. Also, the results of the multiple regression analysis show that the explanation coefficient is equal to .405; that is, 40% of the total change in the fear of crime is due to changes in the two independent variables remaining in the final model.
Based on the results, the dependent variable of the degree of fear of crime is affected by three variables of social disorganization, local ties and social trust.
