Choosing Suitable Species of Thymus Based on the Morphological Characteristics to Use in Urban Green Space

Message:
Abstract:
There are different climates in Iran, thus this country has high diversity of medicinal plants. Using Thymus in urban green spaces doubles the efficiency of this valuable plant. This study was conducted using native species of Thymus from foothills of Sabalan (Sareyn, Ardabil, Nir, and Germy), in the Agricultural and Natural Resources Faculty of University of Mohaghegh Ardabili in 2015 following a completely randomized design. Traits including root and shoot length, fresh weight, dry weight, and volume were studied in this research. The results showed that Thymus kotschyenus, T. pubescens and T. transcaucasicus have the highest amounts of the root and shoot fresh weight, dry weight, and volume, respectively. The results were only different with respect to the length of root and shoot and these species were in lower ranks. Therefore, the three aforementioned species, as valuable and important medicinal plants of Thymus, can be used in the design and creation of green spaces in places like botanic gardens and educational fields in Ardabil.
