Predicting Student's Suicidal Thoughts Based on Depression, Borderline Personality Disorder, Religiosity, Social Support and Coping Strategies

The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of depression, borderline personality disorder, religiosity, social support and coping strategies in predicting students’ suicidal thoughts. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, girls () and boys () residing in the Tabriz University’s student dormitory were selected by multi-level cluster sampling method and then administered by Suicide Ideation Scale (SIS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ). Data were analyzed with using Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis (Simultaneous). The statistical data analysis showed that there was positive significant correlation between depression, borderline personality disorder and emotional- focused coping strategy with suicidal thoughts, and negative significant correlation between religiosity, social support and problem- focused coping strategy with suicidal thoughts. In addition, the result of regression analysis showed that depression, borderline personality disorder, religiosity, social support and emotional- focused coping strategy account for 0831 percent of the variance in students’ suicidal thoughts. Depression has the strongest predictive power of suicidal thoughts.
