Simulation of Two Phase Penetration and Routing the fluid in a Specified Path in Layered Porous Media with Lattice Boltzmann Method

Abstract:
In this paper, penetration of drop and liquid film in layered porous media is studied by the two phase lattice Boltzmann-Shan and Chen model. Layered porous medium is generated by locating solid obstacles randomly, such that the amount of porosity in each layer and whole domain is a fixed value, making the porous medium more homogeneous. In this study, penetration pattern of liquid drop and liquid film in porous substrate is investigated and viscous fingering and capillary fingering regimes are considered and compared. The influences of porosity and the hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity property of surface are considered, too; generally, increasing the porosity and making the surface hydrophobic cause increasing the penetration rate. Because the porous medium being layered, the effects of using layers with different porosities and having an averaged-specified value in whole domain, on improving the penetration rate are discussed. Also, it is investigated how to change the penetration pattern from the viscous fingering to the capillary fingering regime by means of hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces inside the porous matrix. A unique feature of this research is to provide a mechanism to change the penetration path into specified one.
