A comparative study on the effects of ondansetron and metoclopramide on postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing appendectomy and cholecystectomy

The variety of drugs used to control nausea and vomiting after surgery (PONV). The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of ondansetron with metoclopramide in the prevention of nausea and vomiting after surgery.
This research is a randomized controlled trial on 90 patients undergoing open appendectomy and cholecystectomy referred to Imam Hossain hospital in 2016. Patients divided into the three groups of ondansetron, metoclopramide and placebo that 30 minutes before the end of the operation of each of the above drugs were administered intravenously for them. After the first hour, six hours, twelve hours and 24 hours after surgery, nausea and vomiting were recorded by VAS.
The mean age of the all patient’s was 36.4±18.6 years. Of the total patients, 47 patients (52.2%) were male and the rest female. 63 patients (70%) appendectomy and 27 cases (30%) were cholecystectomy. It was also found that the mean score of severity of nausea was significantly different in the three groups, which was the difference between ondansetron with placebo and metoclopramide with placebo and between ondansetron and metoclopramide was difference significant only at the first and sixth hours.
The impact of both the drug ondansetron and metoclopramide in the control of nausea and vomiting was significantly greater than placebo. So in during the first hour and the sixth postoperative ondansetron was more effective than metoclopramide.
