Predicting Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) Based on Parenting Styles

Abstract:
This study aimed to predict oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) according to parenting styles. The study population was male students in third, fourth & fifth grade of public schools in district 1 of Tabriz city. 303 students were selected with multi-stage cluster sampling style. They were assessed by CSI-4 and Baumrind's parenting styles questionnaire. Data analysis using structural equation modeling (SEM), showed that authoritative parenting styles had negative role, authoritarian & permissive parenting styles had positive role in predicting oppositional defiant disorder symptoms. Consequently, it can be stated that the occurrence and persistence of symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder were affected of developmental and environmental factors, especially the parenting styles. The practical implications of these findings can be as a practice guide in clinical areas and can help in the prevention and treatment of this disorder.
