An Analysis of Figures of Speech in the Sermon of Gharra As May Be Viewed in Statistical Stylistics

Abstract:
Statistical stylistics helps researchers to decide and distinguish different styles. Research method of statistical style is based on quantitative norms and researchers should analyze the components on statistical data. In the paper, with a descriptive, analytical and statistical method, the sermon Gharra` is studies stylistically. As described in the paper, among figures of speech, balanced rhyme and symmetrical rhyme have been used in the sermon equally and more than other figures. Rhyme and parallelism, regarding their music, prepare the readers` mind to perceive the meaning; and among non-verbal figures, the figure of oxymoron has been used mostly. This figure helps the readers to pay attention to requisite denotation, remember the meanings and, consequently, perceive the meaning of the text well. As it seems, Imam`s purpose in using such figures lies in attracting the addressees` attentions to understand the speech better. Such a usage of the figures of speech in this sermon has put in a particular literature position for those learned in the field.
