Prostate Cancer Screening Behaviors and its Related Beliefs among 50-to 70-year-old Men in Hamadan: Appraisal Threat and Coping

Prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases in men and prostate cancer screening behavior plays an important role in reducing cases. This study was performed to investigate beliefs related to prostate cancer screening behaviors among men of retirement centers in Hamadan.
This cross-sectional study was carried out on 403 men who referred to retirement centers through a multistage random sampling method in Hamadan (west of Iran) in 2016. The data gathering tools consisted of 2 self-administered questionnaires with questions about demographic characteristics and Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) constructs. Data were analyzed with SPSS-16 software using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient.
The mean age of men participating in this study was 60.2±5.74. According to the findings, prevalence of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) and Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) were 21.6% and 5.7%, respectively, which were at an inappropriate status. Also, the results of the study showed that the perceived susceptibility toward prostate cancer was at a low level with 44.91%, but the Perceived response efficiency and the perceived reward was 77.88 and 75.9 in the relatively desirable level.
Based on the results of the current study were undesirable perceived susceptibility, perceived reward, fear and perceived self-efficacy, so that their considering is essential to plan educational interventions.
