Abstract:
This thesis considers the conceptualization of simple motion events in Persian language from the cognitive perspective. To this end, the research data are analyzed with a Talmy's theory on frequency of occurrence of motion components in simple Persian motion verbs. In Talmy's view the basic motion event components are “figure”, “ground”, “path” [“source”, “trajectory”, and “goal”], the motion itself, together with “cause” and “manner” as co-events. These are principle factors in the conceptualization of motion events.
The body of this research consists of 126 motion verbs which are derived from different data bases and story books and are analyzed within sentences. The result of the research explores that the “figure” and the “goal” components are in high frequency of occurrence among all basic components and “cause” and “manner” are either in general conflation with the verb root or explore in other parts of a sentence with different phrases.
