Abstract:
Intersections with crossing and turning movements create potentials for vehicle-vehicle, vehicle-pedestrian, and vehicle-bicycle conflicts. Therefore, although intersections constitute a very small portion of the highway system, they are likely points for traffic crash concentrations. Signalized intersections are generally the busiest type of intersections and thus play a key role in the highway safety problems including fatal crashes. Signalized intersections are operationally complex and many factors contribute to their potential safety problems. Good geometric design combined with good traffic control can result in an efficient and safe intersection. So, this paper presents the associated strategies firstly as the fundamental measures to promote intersection safety. However, safety problems at signalized intersections cannot always be solved only with engineering countermeasures. Public information campaigns or enforcement of traffic regulations may be required to promote intersection safety. The current study explains these measures besides other intersection-related infrastructure treatments to provide a comprehensive tool which can help road engineers and professions while designing or dealing with safety issues.
