Understanding Temporal Factors in an Attendable Urban Design

Time has always attracted the attention of architecture and urban design theoreticians, but this has always been studied in aesthetic terms. Meanwhile, the lack of attention to time’s effects on the attendability of urban spaces has resulted in people’s reluctance to be present in urban spaces. To put it in contemporary terms, the accelerating urban rhythms have stopped people from unplanned interactions with other people and the environment. The present research identifies the temporal factors effective on attendability, and assesses them in the context of Isfahan’s Hossain Abad district. The methods used include rhythm analysis, spatial layout analysis, field survey, and interviews. The results show that the lack of variety and complexity in spatial and activity structures, incorrect time management, and boring visual landscapes have resulted in a reduced attendability in the district’s public spaces.
