The Effect of Aromatherapy with Salivia Officinalis Essence on Post-Cesarean Severity of Pain And Vital Signs

Abstract:
Background and Objective

Today, cesarean section is regarded as one of the most common surgical treatment options for women. Cesarean section can save lives if mother or fetus is in danger, but
unfortunately this trend has been converted to a culture in most communities like Iran. Post-cesareanpain disturbs mother’s ability to take care of her child and breastfeeding, so it is necessary to provide an effective low risk post-cesareanpain relief to help mother to take care of their children. This study aims to examinethe effect of aroma of Salvia officinalis on post-cesareanpain and vital signs.

Materials and Methods

Thisclinical trial was conducted on 80 pregnant women presenting to Motazedi Hospital-Kermanshah for cesarean section in 2014. The individuals were randomly divided into two
groups. Aromatherapy was fulfilled with 3 drops of Salvia officinalis essence on the intervention group immediately and 4, 8 and 12 hours after the pain started. Aromatherapy using normal saline was fulfilled on the control group in the same way. Pulse, nausea, vomiting, headache, blood pressure were registered on data sheets. Severity of pain was evaluated and registeredusing numerical rating scale before and after intervention. Data were analyzedin SPSS software using t-tests and Fisher's exact test. P<0.05 was
considered as significant.

Results

Before intervention, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of mean severity of pain (P>0.05);yet, there was a significant difference after intervention (P<0.05). There was a significant difference on the number of painkiller injections between the two groups (P<0.001). Diastolic blood pressure was reduced at the second, third and fourth intervention in intervention group (P<0.05). Systolic blood pressure was reduced at the fourth stage of intervention in intervention group (P=0.03). Yet, there was no difference on the number of pulses between the two groups. Furthermore, no symptom was seen in intervention group. 

Discussion and Conclusion

Aromatherapy with Salvia officinalisessence affects post-cesareanpain and vital signs.
