The Impact of Climate Change on Agricultural Production and Food Security in East Azarbaijan Province

Scientific evidence suggests that droughts, rising temperatures, and greenhouse gas emissions have caused global warming and climate change. It is therefore imperative that the consequences of climate change be identified and appropriate policies adopted to counter it. One of the important consequences of climate change can be on food security. Food security is in some way dependent on climate change, as any change in climate factors directly affects all food components. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to investigate the impact of climate change on agricultural production and food security in East Azarbaijan province using panel data approach and time series model. The results showed that crop production decreased by 1.84 percent with the increase of air temperature. Also, food consumption declines by 0.11 percent, with a one percent reduction in annual rainfall. Therefore, climate change in the province can threaten food security in terms of food supply and consumption by increasing temperature and decreasing rainfall. Therefore, policies to prevent temperature-related damages such as greenhouse development and measures to optimally manage water resources and balance these resources between years are necessary to prevent the negative effects of rainfall fluctuations.
