Determine the estimated validity of Vo2max based on the formula in the female athlete and non-athlete

Abstract:
Background and aim

Maximum oxygen uptake is considered the best indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness, direct measurement, however, is complicate, expensive, time consuming, and requires high subject cooperation. The numerous test have been developed to estimate Vo2max. Heart rate is a one of variables that determine VO2. So using Fick principle develops an equation for a relationship between Vo2max and the ratio between HRmax and HRrest. This study examined the validity of the equation.

Material and Methods

This is a case control study, 19 healthy, nonsmoking women divided into 2 groups. The evaluation test was performed by the RITE3 protocol. Estimated Vo2max based on age was calculated using the equation and HRmax placement was proportional to age instead of HRmax measured.

Results

The results of the study showed that the equilibrium of the measured equation was 17.7±3.03 ml.kg-1.min-1. Also, the results showed that between Vo2max measured and estimated Vo2max (p = 0.177) and between corrected Vo2max and the estimated Vo2max based on age (p = 0/67) is not significantly different. In addition, the results showed that between age and Vo2max and corrected Vo2max, between BMI and Vo2max, between HRrest and Vo2max and corrected Vo2max is not significantly different. But there is a significant correlation between BMI and corrected Vo2max.

Conclusions

According to the results of this study, it can be admitted that Vo2max cannot be estimated by calculating the formula.
