Resolving the Problem of the Claim of Universal Validity in Kant’s Third Critique
In his third critique, Kant sees universal validity possible in aesthetic judgment in two quite different ways. One is requesting the other party to agree, and the second leads to a form of individual freedom and finally collective freedom. These two different paths have made interpreters to reach different opinions. Some, such as Rogerson, claim that Kant’s request is moral. Some others, including Guyer, have maintained that it is a cognitive claim. In the present study, we have attempted to present a proper solution for the problem of universal validity of aesthetic judgment, a solution wherein both the beauty in Kant’s theory and morality are considered with a reliance on the subjectivity theory.
