Psychometric Properties of the Farsi Version of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory among Iranian Couples:Factor Structure, Validity and Reliability
The main purpose of the present study was to investigate psychometric properties of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI-40, Raskin & Terry, 1988) in the sample of Iranian couples. In this correlational study, 100 couples (100 male and 100 female) completed the NPI40, The Marital Conflict Questionnaire (MCQ, Sanaei & Barati, 1379) and the Marital Burnout questionnaire (MBQ, Paniz, 1996). The confirmatory factor analysis method and internal consistency were used to compute the NPI's factorial validity and reliability, respectively. Also, in order to examine the construct validity of the NPI's, we computedcorrelations between different dimensions of NPI with components of the marital conflict and marital burnout. The results of confirmatory factor analysis showed that 7-factor structure of the aauthority, self-sufficiency, superiority, vanity, exhibitionism, entitlement, and exploitativeness in the sample of Iranian couples had good fit with data after incorporating the correlated error terms in the analysis between the pairs of items. Correlational analyses between factors of narcissism with components of the marital conflict and marital burnout provided initial evidence for the NPI-40 convergent validity. Internal consistency for the aauthority, self-sufficiency, superiority, vanity, exhibitionism, entitlement, and exploitativeness scales was 0/83, 0/75, 0/72, 0/69, 0/65, 0/61 & 0/71 respectively. In sum, these findings provide evidence for the validity and reliability of the Farsi version of the NPI as an instrument to measure of narcissism construct in the sample of the Iranian couples.
