The effectiveness of self-compassion training on nurses' family performance management

Abstract:
Background and Objective

Nurses play a very important role in health team leadership. However, due to some work-related problems, they may encounter conflicts in their family roles such as maternal, spouse roles and in their self-care. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of self-compassion training on nurses' family performance management.

Materials and Methods

The research method was quasi-experimental with pre - post test with the control group which was done in 2019. The sample consisted of 60 nurses working in psychiatric wards of Shahid Modarres Hospital in Isfahan who were selected by inclusion criteria. They were selected using convenience sampling and were divided into two equal groups of control and intervention randomly. The intervention group participated in eight 90-minute sessions of compassion-focused group training, but the control group did not. Before and after the intervention, the Epstein Family Functioning Scale was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive (mean, standard deviation, frequency, Percentage), and analytical tests (Independent t-test, paired t-test, chi-square) in SPSS software V:14.

Results

The mean score of family functioning management before education in the intervention group was 132.13± 42.92 and in the control group was 126.47 ± 26.78 which was not significantly different (P <0.05). After the intervention, those mean score in the intervention group was 160.96 ± 39.05 while in the control group it was 127.63 ± 37.36 which was significantly different (P <0.01).

Conclusion

Self-compassion training was evaluated positively on family functioning management of nurses. Therefore, these trainings can be effective in controlling part of the work-family conflicts and it is suggested to be considered in the nurses' training program.
