Focal Correlation Analysis Between the Components of University Culture and University Social Responsibility (Case Study: Shahid Beheshti University)

Abstract:
Objectives

The aim of this research is investigating the relationship between the components of university culture and the components of social responsibility of higher education among the faculty members of Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran.

Method

The present study is a descriptive correlational survey that has been conducted in the field. 193 faculty members of Shahid Beheshti University were randomly selected as the statistical sample of this study. Two scales of Bergquist University Culture (2008) and Wallace University Social Responsibility (2008) were used. Also, Focal Correlation method was used to analyze the data. In this study, Cronbach's alpha for social responsibility α = 0.98 and for academic culture α = 0.94.

Results

The research data were collected based on the research hypothesis and analyzed using focal correlation analysis. According to the level of significance obtained, the linear relationship between all variables evaluated was significant at the level of 5% probability. The findings confirmed the research hypothesis and the dimensions of university social responsibility (responsible university, vocational education, social management and social participation) with the dimensions of university culture (participatory, managerial, developmental, advocacy and virtual) were predictable and had a significant relationship. Also, in the social responsibility set, the responsible university (0.563) and in the university culture set, advocacy culture (0.57) were the most important. In the present study, the weight of common variance between this variable is 65%, which was significant with a value of F = 11.31 at the level of 0.001.

Conclusion

In this study, the results of focal analysis with 99% probability of correlation between two sets of variables have been confirmed. Responsible university, social management, vocational education and social participation, which are components of university social responsibility, were better envisioned with advocacy culture, managerial culture, developmental culture, virtual culture and participatory culture of academic culture. Therefore, the results of this study indicate the need for policy review in relation to the two important categories of university culture and social responsibility of the university in the eyes of policy makers in these two areas, as well as further reflection and research on these two axes.
