Examining the emphasis of the 9th math textbook on teaching real-world problem solving
One of the goals of Iran National Curriculum is student's ability to apply mathematics in life outside of school and in real world. For this reason, the textbook should be written in such a way that students become familiar with this type of problem and also, learn the ability to solve this type of problem. In other words, one of the main goals of mathematics education is to train people who can face challenges of world around them with the help of their mathematical literacy and overcome them. The purpose of this study is to examine the emphasis of the 9th math textbook on teaching real-world problem solving. Content analysis method has been used to conduct this research. The instruments used are content analysis forms that have been used to determine its validity from the perspective of experts and specialists in mathematics education. The results indicate that the 9th grade math textbook places little emphasis on real-world problems, as well as the heterogeneous distribution of these problems in different chapters of the book. The results of this research can be used in reviewing and improving math textbooks, teacher training and reviewing assessment methods in order to improve students' math literacy.
