Three Case Reports of Esophageal Tuberculosis

Abstract:

Rare cases of esophageal tuberculosis have been reported. In this report, 3 cases of tuberculosis-resulted ulcer in the esophageal mucosa are to be introduced among 29 cases of gastrointestinal tuberculosis. The first patient was presented with chills and fever and had a mild dysphagia and odynnophagia and a burning sensation behind the sternum. The second case admitted with neck fistula and esophageal fistula was revealed by fistulography and the third case with fever, dysphagia and right supraclavicular abscess. After clinical examination, for all of the cases, biochemical tests, chest radiography and endoscopy was ordered. In the first case, at the distal portion of the esophagus and for the other cases at its proximal portion, an ulcerative lesion was observed. The esophageal mucosa was inflamed around the fistula and histological study through biopsy revealed inflammation and granuloma. A positive result was obtained for acid fast bacillus (AFB) staining method in all of the cases. No evidence of active pulmonary tuberculosis was found and all of the cases responded to conventional drugs.
