The Mediating Role of Teachers’ Work Engagement in Relation to Character Strengths with Burnout

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of mediating teachers' work engagement in character strengths with burnout. The participants were 320 secondary school teachers from Semnan who were selected by simple random sampling method. All of them completed the questionnaires of Peterson and Seligman Values in Action Inventory of Strengths, Maslach Job Burnout and Bakker & Schaufeli work engagement. The hypothesized model was tested using structural equation modeling and LISREL software. The findings showed that the model was fitted. Direct structural effect of character strengths on burnout was not significant. Character strengths in the mediation of work engagement on the burnout of teachers have a direct and significant structural effect.Considering work engagement of teachers as an important factor in facilitating burnout in educational institutions is important. According to the results of this study, it is suggested that educational officials consider the development and implementation of character strengths recognition and empowerment programs to increase work engagement and reduce teachers' burnout.
