The Effectiveness of Optimism Skills Training on Academic Boredom of Students with Poor Academic Performance

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of optimism skills training on academic boredom of students with poor academic performance. This study was applied in terms of purpose and experimental in terms of method with pre-test-post-test design with control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all male students studying in the tenth grade of the second secondary school in Ardabil city in the academic year 2020-2021, among which 40 students poor academic performance were selected using cluster random sampling method and was replaced randomly assigned to the experimental group (n= 20) and control group (n= 20). The participants of the experimental group received 8 sessions of optimism skills training. Pekrun, Goetz, Titz & Perry Academic Boredom Scale (2002) were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance. The results showed that students with poor academic performance in the experimental group had significantly less academic boredom than students with poor academic performance in the control group in the post-test (P<0/001). Therefore, it can be concluded that optimism skills training is effective in reducing academic boredom of students with poor academic performance and it can be used by school psychologists and counselors.
