Taqiyyah

In this paper, the author begins with a definition of the concept taqiyyah in Shicite thought, and then examines the reasons for its legitimacy according to Shicite fiqh, which is based on the Qur’an, Sunna (Prophet Mohammad’s and Shicite Imams’ way of life, remarks and practice), Ijmāc (consensus among the ‘ulamā) and reason. He also considers the origins of the concept, and circumstances in which it is authorised or prohibited. Among the Shica, taqiyyah is considered as a tactical measure for protecting the faith.
