Abstract:
Among the large variety of Persian treatises on arithmetic (ʿilm al-ḥisāb), a few are attributed to Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (597-672/1201–1274), which need to examine. Many cataloguers identified a Persian work assumed to be the translation from his well-known work, Jawāmiʿ al-ḥisāb bi al-Takht was-al-turāb (The Comprehensive Collection of Arithmetic with the Board and Dust) on Indian arithmetic, despite the numerous intertextual similarities, it is not a translation of Jawāmiʿ al-ḥisāb and based on some traces of Old Persian, it dates back to earlier. A Persian treatise on algebra called Guzῑda (The Compendium), copied by ʿAlāʾal-Dawla Yazdῑ in 1057/1647, is considered a translation of Ṭūsī's algebra (al-Jabr was-al-muqābala). However, this treatise is essentially the third chapter of a more extensive and more detailed work on arithmetic entitled Khatm bi Żiʿf and composed by Abū al-Qāsim Jurjānῑ in 950/1543. Another work, known as al-Żarb wa-al-qismat, is a part of Tusi's treatise on practical arithmetic, Jāmiʿ al-ḥisāb, although it remains unidentified in most catalogues and is considered to be a translation of Jawāmiʿ al-ḥisāb.
